I was wondering if anyone could tell me how they make character cakes. I am going to explain this or ask this the best way I know how. The cake itself is about two or three inches high and smooth on all the sides. Then the actual top of the cake is smooth, except where the character is. I would love to make the sides and the top smooth, and just star tip the character, but if you do that, how do you know where to make your stars at? Whenever I do character cakes I use the indentations to figure out where my colors are supposed to go .. hmm I dont know if I am asking this right. Do you crumb coat? And then re-ice just around where your stars are supposed to go? icon_confused.gificon_confused.gif anyone understand?

i absolutely detest star fill-in character cakes! they make me crazy!! if i absolutely MUST do one, i frost smoothly the cake with BC and use the pic that comes with the pan to freehand the best i can. It makes me too crazy to try to work with the indentations. I dont think i have ever purchased one of the character pans but i have friends/family who buy it, ask me if i can do it and tell me i can keep the pan (which i never use again!).

You don't have to do the stars on a character cake. My cheerleader (in my photos) was done by just piping and spreading the frosting on the cake. I don't cake to do all of those stars either. To frost the sides smooth use the icing tip and then smooth with your spatula.

Oh, and I use the raised areas on the cake as well as the picture that comes with it so I know where to apply the colors.

I HATE stars on cakes also. I have never tried it, but I have always wondered if I could just do a big FBCT using the picture that comes with the pan. People would wonder how in the world you got that cake so perfect. What do you guys think
