I am in over my head here for a cake for this weekend. I was asked to do a German themed cake for someone who likes German castles and is moving there for 2 years. Its a going away party/ birthday party for 50-70 people.

If you wouldn't mind tossing some ideas at me?

Thanks so much, Kim

Maybe an outline of a castle drawn on the cake, w/ a german flag (it's a simple one), and a German phrase or word of welcome? "Willkommen nach Deutschland" (welcome to Germany) or "Herzlichen Gluckwunsche zum Geburtstag" (happy birthday)?

Just some thoughts...

Boy that's tough. When I first saw German I was thinking a cuckoo clock would be cool, with the little figures done in fondant or something - "Time to Move", but the castle thing threw me all off.

www.cuckookingdom.com has some really great clocks, nothing with castles tho, sorry icon_sad.gif

Could you do a Gargoyle? Google "German gargoyle" for ideas there. That would be cool and different?

www.roadstoruins.com has a list of different German castles, definitly use Google to your advantage, esp Google images.

YES the castle thing is proving to be quite difficult, their castles are so huge and detailed. I like the idea of outlining a castle and drawing their flag. The only thing is the cakes that I do always seem to have something 3d on top of the cake. Gargoyles is good, but I forgot to mention they are doing an Octoberfest theme for the party too so I would like to stick w/ travel-castle-beer icon_smile.gif

I would still love to hear any other ideas. I am less then 48 hrs away until delivery YIKES

make a joke about ... "so, is this your new home?" or similar. ("Irhen neue hause?" <..check that...not sure of verb form)

I have done these cakes before and these are my suggestions. Create a map and outline the country. (To do this I went online found the outline of the country, blew it up, cut it out and on crusted b/c I used a knife to outline it. Then, I put the Germany flag on a toothpick and insert it in the cake. Include points of interest; A mini Castle, include frosted peaks for mountains, major lakes, beer, forests, Mozart's home, Capital or the the city she is moving to. (i.e. my China cake idea was doing the Great wall. I used graham cracker crumbs for earth/land, blue water for oceans and lakes. I use green spray die for the grass color. It is really fun!

I hope this helps. Just do a little research and find fun facts about Germany!

If they're doing an Oktoberfest style party, I'd go for the lederhosen or a beerstein, colours are blue/white checkered diamonds for bavaria, make sure that you put a lot of froth on the beer, we like that. For that many people you can play a little and do both

Or you could do a woman in a Dirndl (don't forget a large cleavage) they are needed to make a dirndl look good. You could google pics of them. Try Dirndl or Trachten.
Could also model them both out of gumpaste and have them sitting on a blue/white diamond checkered Tablecloth with a gigantic second beersteincake next to them

Thanks for all the advice and the German languge lessons LOL. I was able to use them and put them on flags on the cake. I just went w/ a castle like those in Germany since that is more what she was looking for. You guys all had such great ideas, thanks for the help. She was thrilled with it and I felt pretty good about it too icon_smile.gif
