I know we all live and breath cakes around here, but I know many of us have a life and other interests. What are yours?

My mom taught me to crochet 40 years ago. When my Marine son left for his first tour of Iraq, I had some nervous-mom energy, so I created the design for my American Flags. Sold one at a fund-raiser auction and it was the highest priced item that sold!!! I keep some stocked in a consigment shop and depending on the time of year, sometimes I can't keep them stocked.

I've posted a pic on my Flickr website..... take a peek!

Wow!!! That's beautiful!!! I JUST finished a flag blanket the other day! I was making it for a baby blanket, but um, it kind of turned out to be a lot bigger than expected. I will go take a pic and post it!

Not so sound crazy, but how much do these lovely items go for? I SO want to buy the crochet flag for my mom and the blanket for my DH! By the way ...You BOTH rock!!!! I could never do anything like that!

That blanket is awesome! I always make new babies in our family an afghan with a matching pillow, so I can appreciate the work you put into this! I've seen other flag blankets and yours outshines them all! Did you build the stars into the design or did you make them separately and then attached them to the blue field?

My wall-hanging flag takes about 40 hours to make (40 squares and it takes about 2 episodes of Seinfeld to do a square!). I normally get $75 for one. PM me for special CC'er pricing ......

I love crochet!!! I learned how to do it when I was 6 y-o. I'm making right now a big blanky with all the little balls of yarns I have left from other projects. Some colors don't really go together, but it'll be for the hunting camp, for my dad and my son. I don't think they'll mind if it looks weird icon_lol.gif

Both your projects are super great. it gives me the idea to try it with the Quebec flag!!!

Thanks for the compliments! I love the look of your wall hanging, but I have not tried to crochet anything so tiny yet, no doilies or anything. I stick to afgans and scarves and other weird things.

Here is the link to the pattern:
http://www.lionbrand.com/patterns/chs-americanaAfghan.html

I only ever use free patterns that I find here:
http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory.php

I sometimes use other places, but they usually have what I am looking for.

This afgan was made form the bottom up and yes, I made the blue field and 50 stars and then sewed each star onto the blanket. The baby was born in NOVEMBER and I just finished it! Like I said, it was a lot bigger that expected.

Pootchie, the lady who runs the consignment shop where I sell these tells me that crocheting is becoming a lost art. (Huh? Really?) When she first approached me about putting doilies and the flag in her shop, I kinda guffawed because "oh come on .... everybody can make this stuff, why would they pay for it?" She then told me she is having a hard time finding folks who can crochet. She does a lot of business from tourists and they really snatch this stuff up.

It blew me away. I had no idea this was becoming a lost artform! So be sure to pass it on!

I did almost all the baby blankets for my first born. I was on bed rest and I decided that crochet could be a good thing to do so I don't get bored! I did a lot of blankets for others after that. I use the same patterns so now I can crochet while I'm watching tv!!!
Did you know you can make shopping bags with plastic bags, cut and crocheted together? I love recycling ideas!

You take a plastic bag and fold it in 4 (from the sides) and then you cut strips about ½ inch wide. Now you'll get loops. You take two loops and tie them together, and so on, to make a chain. After that, you crochet, like there's no loops, just one big thread of plastic. You make a crochet chain, the lenght you want, for the size of bag you want. Than you crochet. No patterns needed. You make a big rectangle that you fold in too, sew the sides with more plastic "thread", then, you can start a handle on one side, about 2 inches, and crochet the length you want, and attach it at the other side. And depends on what kind of plastic bags you have, the colors will be different from one bag to another. You can use just one store's bags to get a smoother pattern, or use all kinds to kae it wild and funny! The plastic gets more strength when crochet like this, so you can use it for shopping! But it takes a lot of plastic bags to make one. If you need more instructions feel free to ask!!!
