I wanted to make a Lowering Device Cake. It's the machine that the caskets get lowered with at a cemetery. You could goggle it if you dont'know what it looks like. It's rectangular with two fabric straps across the middle and four "cans" where the motor is kept. I've tried to figure out how to make one for a long time. Today for the first time I actually came up with some ideas, either the long side pipes could be made out of cupcakes, frosted and covered in fondant. The four cans could be made out of the soccer ball pan. My second thought is jelly rolls for all the pipes. Fondant (textured with cheesecloth) could make the fabric straps. The pipes aren't actually suppose to touch the ground like the cans but I can't figure out how I'd be able to do that. I have never carved a cake and I've only used fondant in class. A custom cake like this will be challenging but I'm sure I can do it with your help. All suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ohhhh okay!
Yes, that would be neat to display at one of the exhibits! You'll have to post pics of it when you've got it done! Sounds interesting & challenging!

okay........here is a photo I found........I think this is doable.........what about make the whole thing a cake and then make that bottom skirt out of fondant and the pipes could just be either logs of fondant hit up with some silver luster dust or you could cover a dowel in fondant and paint it silver..( I tend to go the all edible route whenever possible)

edited to say: oh and I don't know what to do about the whole inside being hollow........does it have to be empty???? maybe you could give the illusion of it being empty??/ I would make the whole thing the cake though! like a stacked rectangular shaped cake

I like KHalstead's idea
also, you could do a sheetcake and a smaller lowering device on the top made out of sculpted, fondant covered rice krispie treats, the only thing that would maybe need changed is 2 extra supports in the middle of the longer bars, 1 on each side.
play around with ideas and have fun, that's what this hobby/business is about lol

That is certainly one different idea. I think rice crispies would be the easiest to work with. After they've dried for several days you can sand them into a rather smooth surface. And it won't matter how long they sit out, or how hot or cold. Let's see photos.

if you want to give the illution that it's actually empty..you can lay a "mirror" over the top...put the lustre "pipes" around the cake and 2 fondant straps across.

The reflection of the mirror would make it look empty.

or you can make an extra cake and make the actual coffin to go on top!

love the idea of the mirror.....funny I was brainstorming on how to make it look "like a mirror" on the top.......never thought of actually sticking a mirror on the top LOL

Great ideas thanks. I can tell this has many options now. I don't know anything about working with rice krispies, heck, my kids don't even eat them. But I really like that idea since it allows for more time incase of mistakes. I also like it because I can keep the device for the whole day and still offer the cake to people walking by. What would I sand the rice krispies with.
The mirror is a cool idea too.
I don't want to put a coffin on it since that would hide what I'm trying to promote, but that was another good idea.
I haven't worked with luster dust either so I'll have to look into it.
Thanks for brainstorming.

Did you read the whole thread? we were just helping bring the idea to fruition... icon_rolleyes.gif

denise4, first let me say if you can't say anything nice..........

People make every body part and body organ on this website, dead animals and cat poop (I made one of them ha ha). I wonder if those are all in bad taste too. I did a gallery search for casket and found several picture of caskets with people's names on them. Bad taste?? Not to the person who made them.

I am trying to promote a product I sell to people that are in the same business. If a person sold bicycles and asked for a bicycle cake it would be there same thing. A product and a cake.

With that being said does anyone else have ideas, I can't wait to make it and post my pictures!! thumbs_up.gifusaribbon.gif

I have no idea on how to make this cake but I just was wondering why some people get offended about things that go on in REAL life. Dying is something that happens to all of us sooner or later and obviously someone has to make the things that are needed for the burial even if they dont want to talk about them they do exist. And there are people who do these things for a living and like us promoting cakes to sell so we can live they do the same thing.
