I'm thinking of a "flying"Zero dog for my Nightmare Before Christmas cake. What kind of wire do you use and how does it stay so nice in the cake? Thanks again for your help! icon_biggrin.gif

I think I read where somebody said you used florist wire, but I'm not sure. I'd love to know the right answer so here's a bump.

Yup, floral wire. Pick a gauge that will be strong enough to hold the piece that will be on it (I usually use 18 or 20 gauge). For sticking it in the cake, make sure you cover the portion of the wire that will actually be sticking in the cake. There are many different things that people do to cover the wire: dip the end in thinned royal icing, melted chocolate, or rap it tightly with saran wrap. I like to use floral picks and fill those with gum paste to hold the wire.

Thank you!

How do you fill the floral picks up? aren't they solid?

These spikes are for cakes--put them in the cake so that you can add water and put fresh flowers in them. Here is a pic: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E312C10-475A-BAC0-5D34A3D6D0BDDF27&fid=3E331274-475A-BAC0-5041EF53F94DDB26
