Hi,

I haven’t made a cake in 5 years because I burned out. I agreed to make an 80th bday cake for a family member and I’m trying to add a kiss/lips stencil effect to the top tier.

I cannot for the life of me get my SMBC a vibrant red. I’m using Americolor Super Red and it’s a salmon pink despite my adding quite a bit. All of the tutorials I watched said to make the icing in advance, which I did but since it’s a meringue frosting, it has to be refrigerated and I guess the color-deepening-with-time is just for icings that can stay out of the fridge.

I’m now afraid the taste will be compromised due to the amount of Super Red in the frosting.

Is there a way to use a stencil without icing? I’m wondering if I blotted red food color powder over the stencil if that would work.

Any advice would be most welcomed! The party is on Thursday so I have a little time.

i'm probably too late but i can think of two options -- use an already red food color icing tube from the grocery store and just paint over the top -- just like you apply lipstick -- look in the icing aisle -- and the other is, use fondant -- also available in small quantity from some grocery stores --

hope you got it worked out!!! best to you

Swiss meringue buttercream never reaches the same deep rich colors that regular buttercream does. It taste so good that I don't care.

This is probably too late, but maybe info for next time. I add colour and gently microwave the buttercream until it is almost liquified, I''m not a scientist but the colour mixes through properly in the butter is in a liquid state. I found this out by accident when I micro'd some buttercream too long and my soft pink turned into vibrant hot pink. I tried it again on purpose and it worked. I have no idea why, it just does.
