I was just asked to do my first wedding
The bride wants a cake at each table - about 5 or 6 tables. She wants a 10 in. bottom with a 6 in. layer on top of that. Very simple decorations, but a different flavor for each cake. Apparently the guests will serve themselves. There will be 75-100 guests - will that be enough cake?? tHanks for any help!!
Wedding cakes are often priced based on servings.
Based on Earlene's serving chart:

a 6" and 10" would serve about 38 people. You can multiply the number of servings by the amount you decide to charge per serving.
For instance, $3 per serving x 38 servings, would give you a total of $114 (for each 6 and 10" cake). You can use this as a starting point and add in for whatever decorations and what not!

i would suggest to her to do 6 & 8 " cakes rather than 6 and 10. (you are planning on two of each size to make a 4" high cake right?) the 6 and 8 would make 23 servings give or take (i think those must be generous servings) according to that chart from earlene. if you do five or six of those you will have over a hundred, which should be more than enough. I would start by calling around to your local bakeries to get a feel for local prices, but would say that a good starting point would be $3 for bc and $4 for fondant.
Only 5 or 6 tables for 100 guests? At 6 tables, that's about 16 people per table! How big are these tables?
Most round tables will seat 8 or MAYBE 10 guests if they are good sized tables. So you are talking 10 or 12 cakes, if one cake per table. Even if she's using the long rectangle tables for her guests, there are usually 4 on each side plus 1 on each end .... a total of 10 per table and again, 10 tables = 10 cakes.
You better have her do a reality check before she thinks "100 people at 5 tables should be only 5 cakes!"
And I would definitely do an upcharge for this type of cake. This is an example of where the bridal magazines are telling brides that a bunch of little cakes is ALWAYS cheaper than one big cake ...... NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I were doing a 3-tiered cake for 100, I'd make 14/10/8, which is 7 cake mixes. A 10" and a 6" is about 3 mixes x 10 tables = 30 cake mixes!! You're doing over 4 times the work so she better be paying 4 times the "regular" price. Does she know how big a 10" cake is????
Even at the very good suggestion of changing it to 8" and 6" = 2 mixes x 10 tables = 20 mixes ...... still almost 3 times the work over a "normal" wedding cake, so she should expect to pay 3 times the price.
I'll say it again ..... sounds like this bride needs to do a reality check.
Yes, those tables usually only seat about 10 per table. You may want to confirm that with her and I do think that the 8" and 6" is a better idea but that's a lot of cake (32 servings per cake) for 10 people if you have one at each table?

I'm doing a taste testing soon (the 11th) for a bride who wants cakes at each table. They plan on 10 people per table and I've suggest double layer 8". For the taste testing I'm taking 4 - 4" cakes of different flavors and fillings. One will only have b/c filling. They will all have b/c icing. I plan on charging $20 for each cake if they only want b/c and a border (they are thinking of fresh flowers for the cakes). If they want me to do more than borders (i.e. special fillings and decor such as ribbons, fondant, etc.) then the prices go up to $25 - $30 per cake. The ingredients alone for 20 cakes will be at least $100.00. Of course, I'm also charging for set-up and delivery. I've researched this extensively and am sure there will be add'l things I will learn if I do get the order. My two daughters will be assisting me on this endeavor. Quite an order for my first wedding!!!
Thank you again - this is also my first wedding and I hadn't even thought about having that many people at so few tables - figured that was the wedding consultant's problem - but I guess it will effect me in this case!
She found the picture of the cake she wants in a magazine - she definitely wants the top layer smaller than the bottom - so that would have to be a 6 & 8, right? Also, the guests will be serving themselves,, so I am assuming they will be cutting biger pieces. I know at my house, a 6 in cake is NOT going to serve 12 people! More like 3-4!
