Hi
I have never made made a fondant figure. As a matter a fact I have only ever even worked with fondant once.
However I would like to make a fondant lady playing a fondant harp.
I thought I could use spun sugar for the strings of the harp and I wondered if I could use spun sugar for the hair? Has any one had tried that?
I have read all the threads I can find on Fondant figures. I'm still not sure how to make the hands and Clothes and how to attach the clothes. Does anyone have any tips on how to do those?
Thanks So Much,
Emily
You could use all sorts of things for hair. I use modelling paste, usually pushed through my sugarcraft gun, but I've heard people using cotton, royal icing, or just rolling it really modelling paste thinly and sticking it on one strand at a time.
I've never worked with spun sugar so I can't advise you there.
When I'm making figures, I usually try to make their bodies in the colour and shape of the clothes I want them to be wearing, so if I was making a bride for example, I'd make her torso out of white and also her arms, and then attach hands onto them so that it looks like she's wearing a white dress, I very rarely make a figure and then dress it, I only do this for things like jackets, when I do that, I just roll out the paste thinly and measure it against the figure before I cut it into the right shape and size. I may have to adjust it several times before I get it right.
It's all a bit of trial and error, but it's fun
There's info on making/attaching hair and another on attaching clothing in these links:

Spun sugar is very similar to cotton candy, it is effected by humidity in the air. I doubt very much that the harp strings or even the hair would hold up for more than an hour or so, and how would you get the sugar threads they same length and width for the strings? I would make the harp of gumpaste or pastillage and make the strings with clear dental floss, or maybe dry angel hair or vermicelli pasta. The hair with a clay extruder or clay gun and fondant, gumpaste or 50/50 paste.
ShirleyW - thanks For the information on spun sugar. I didn't know that never having worked with that either.lol Can you tell I am thinking about something WAY over my head. lol
I have another question
The figure would need to be sitting on a short bench or chair. (because that's is the way harpists do it and a lot of harpists would see this cake) I think a short bench would be easier. If I put something like spaggatti in the legs of the bench would that make it strong enough to hold the figure?
Thanks a Bunch,
Emily
