My aunt is getting married in September. She's requesting for her wedding cake, a cowboy boot standing up with a cowboy hat leaning against it. Anyone got any ideas on how to make this? I'm thinking pouring cake batter in an old boot wouldnt work (just kidding).
Sounds like you'll have to have a few layers to achieve the height and then carve it into the boot shape -- covering in fondant might be the easiest way to decorate.
If that fails -- just ice a real boot and serve already sliced cake to guests -- kidding!!!!!
I've never seen one where the cake was boot shaped, but Earlene Moore has one on her web site where the topper iss boots with a hat leaning on them. Check it out:

Look right under the double horseshoe cake, there is the cake. Right next to that pic is a close up of the topper. HTH!

Here is one done by Earlene Moore. I don't begin to know how she did it other than it's possibly from gumpaste or fondant, but her work is amazing! It's a small version of it but I'm sure with thought it could be done in a 3D larger scale size.
There might be some cake pans out there..... but I guess I would think about using a really dense cake (like a pound cake) and then I would make several 6 inch (or smaller, you can get 4 inch cake pans) cakes and stack them, but I would tort them and put a little frosting between the layers. I would make sure I was sliding it over a center dowel to make sure such a tall thing would stand up. Then carve the cake into a boot shape. (lots of small layers with frosting in between helps hold it together as you carve it) I would clearly do the toe of the boot seperately from the tier of 6 inch cakes. Then cover the whole thing in Fondant. You can then paint the fondant to how you would like it.
I don't like to carve cakes, but my friend ChefCindy does a great job, you can search her and maybe she can give you some advice.
Maybe a few oval cakes on the bottom then rounds on top, offset to the side of the oval to get the height. Then the sticking out part of the oval becomes the toe of the boot when carved. Whatever you end up doing, dowel it well!! ![]()
