Infrared Thermometer To Check Oven Temp

Has anyone used a infrared thermometer to check oven's temperature?
i have not but sounds like a good idea i guess -- why not? but i am not a guru on thermometers or anything -- i'd just read the instructions and make sure it's ok -- i don't even know what an infrared is exactly 
Trouble with an infrared thermometer is you have to open the oven door to point the thermometer. So instantly, you lose heat once the door is open. Infrared was not made for this purpose. It’s to check surface temperature. You need an actual oven thermometer.
