Does this only happen to me or are there others who have been requested cakes for weird parties? First an out of jail cake and now this. Well, the customer is my 7 y/o daughter who has been planning her dog's first birthday since he was born. She wants a cake that the dog can eat. I'll do a regular cake for us but what about the dog? I need to make something that he can eat, any suggestions?

Yes, I made a cake for my 'nephew' Buddy the gorgeous little guy in the pic below! His Mommy is nuts over him (my sis... no kids) and so are we really, so he's like a real child. For the dog, jus make sure you don't use a lot of chocolate. A tiny touch won't kill them, but too much will make them sick. You can also search online for recipes specifically meant for pets. There are tons of them!! In my pics, the cake that says "Happy Birthday Hot Dog" was for Buddy! Good luck, and have fun with it! Mine was very basic because it was last minute. If I had known ahead I would have made something really fun and doggy-ish!! icon_wink.gif

I don't know how big you want to do it but if it wasn't very big what about a meatloaf iced in buttercream or something similar? I'd stay away from making an actual cake because a iced cake can be hard on their livers, etc. And of course, stay far away from chocolate!

Funny... I did a thread on this a couple weeks back for 2 dogs getting married.. the best idea i though was the meatloaf cake iced in mashed potatoes... sounded cute.. mine was for a wedding though, so the dog's layer would have been the top and then I would have done a cake for everyone else to eats on the bottom, separated of course... so NO you aren't the only one who has been asked!

I have a ton of cake recipes for a dog (mine is like my kid right now too!), the neighborhood dogs love them! Here is one recipe, if you are looking for anything else pm me and I will send you some more.

1 cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/3 cup chopped peanuts
1 egg
1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup honey
3 TBS peanut butter
1 cup grated carrots

preheat oven to 325. grease and flour pan (makes on 8" cake)

combine first five ingrediants, mix in the rest until combined. Bake for 10-20 min until toothpick comes out clean

for frosting...mix 8oz fat free cream cheese with 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter, blend until smooth...store cake in fridge

as with any recipe for a human, check for allergies...

Yes, that's what I would like to do next year... the meatloaf and mashed potatoes idea!! I saw that on Martha Stewart, of course it was for humans, but I think that would be awesome for dogs too. But if you do the sweet cake, you just don't let them have that much. Just like 'people' it's all about moderation! icon_wink.gif

I made a birthday cake for my English Bulldog. Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. She had a piece and seemed to love it.

The Three Dog Bakery has two cook books that have cake recipes for dogs. They have some icing recipes too.

I haven't made a birthday cake, but I made mini bundt cakes at Christmas for my friends' dogs. All the dogs loved them! I also made cookie recipes and my dogs love those too.

The topping is carob not chocolate. The thing I liked about the Three Dog cook books is that they lists the ingredients that shouldn't be used in recipes for dogs and indgredients that are safe.

I haven't officially made a cake for a dog, but Poj has eaten several of mine - including a large chocolate cake that cost £250 to have pumped back out of her at the vets! Why not squish a mixture of wet dog food and dog biscuits into a shaped tin and put a bit of buttercream icing to decorate? I've seen a tv programme where a load in insane American women had dog birthday parties complete with a fashion parade, cake and 'doggy' bags at the end. Cost a fortune was was tragically funny. maybe do a web-search for them to see what they do - they had dog caterers!

They had a segment on the "Today" show yesterday, about dog parties, and they had several dogs on with dog cakes and bones, etc. It was really cute, and a great idea.

ooh! Thank you so much for the responses. You guys are all so nice. I feel so much better about doing this. I like all the ideas. Now the problem is deciding which one to make. I'll probably do the squish the dog food into a mold idea if I run out of time since I have to do a cake for us the humans. I'll let you know how it turns out, I have a couple of weeks to plan it.
