How Many Of You Use Acrylic Discs?

I’m planning on giving them a try. How many of you guys use them or have used them? Love them, hate them, no opinion?
I know a few that use acrylic discs. They definitely work, but can be pricey. I just use stiff cardboard rounds. I cut 1/4” to 1/2” larger than my actual cake. They do the trick. One cardboard round on top and bottom of the cake, and just like the acrylic discs, icing and using a bench scrapper, you get a even sides on your cake and a smooth top. I do the upside down method.
I have a set for an 8" cake that I've used once. I guess I didn't do it right because my top sort of had air pockets (or something, not smooth) in it. I was not impressed.
I had a full set, & could never get it just right. Just started using them as bottom plates. All the frosting stuck to them, I just was unable to learn the proper method. So I started putting the parchment paper on them. Paper stuck.
Just a No Go for me.
