Hello caking community!! :)

I'm Oliver, a 37 year old boring finance administrator (nearly fell asleep writing it).

Last year I made a cake for my then five year old son; a Mr Bean cake. At first I thought it would be easy (a piece of..no I won't subject you to the pun) but I couldn't have been more wrong!! All the things I thought would be simple weren't...I found it all out the hard way...from why you need cmc in your toppers (yes, I did try, no I didn't realise and yes it was silly wasn't it) to the mysterious dark art (which is still bewildering to me) of piping.

The whole thing was truly exhausting and whilst driving to the party and watching Mr Bean's giant wobbly head out the corner of my eye, swaying back and forth as if deliberately threatening to summersault off the cake at every speed bump and pot hole, himself on top of a Victoria sponge that was sliding around on its board in the cake box on my partner's lap like an air hockey putt, I swore I'd never make a cake again!!

But then the party happened and I saw my son's eyes light up when we brought out the cake and all his friends gradually picked bits and bobs off the cake, simultaneously sharing and scoffing all the details I'd carefully spent weeks working on, the cat, the garden fence...

I'm now on my 5th cake, the most recent being my son's 6th birthday cake (a Ben 10 cake), and I find myself in an ever deepening rabbit hole of cakey knowledge that is so much deeper than I ever imagined.

So I'm here to share pictures, videos and experiences and hopefully pick up tips.

also — there is some kind of new member delay on being able to "reply" to posts so please start a new thread to continue any discussion -- at some point all of a sudden you will be enabled to "reply" but not for a while -- maybe like 30 days — I think it might have to do with time and activity levels -- please respond in a new thread if you want/need to —
