I want to get this effect on a half sheet cake. It’s a distressed flag design for a car enthusiast group. I was thinking of using black fondant for the stripes but I’m open to other ideas/methods/techniques/etc. thank you!!How Would I Get This Effect?

My first thought is to use white fondant.  Use crumpled aluminum foil to distress the surface, let is dray for a while, then with a small paint (new!) roller, roll over the surface with black gel color mixed with vodka.  If you leave it pretty thick, it will not sink into the cracks, giving the distress look.  For the stars, you could put stickers on the fondant, then roll over them and remove the stickers after the color drys.  I have not tried this, it is just what comes to mind.
