Writing On Smbc

I’m a newbie to cake decorating and I’m having problems writing on my cakes.  I’ve tried melted chocolate but when the chocolate hits the cold metal tip it clogs it up.  I’d like to use my smbc to write with but it breaks really easily.  Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I could make my smbc easier to pipe letters with ?

I have always piped with either all royal icing or mixture of royal icing and buttercream. Buttercream made with all butter.
