OMG guys.
A little back story... I have a "day job" as an insurance auditor and I get to visit some pretty cool businesses in my line of work. The Morena sugar (the green bag that looks like raw sugar) headquarters is in Tucson, where I live and they were kind enough to give me a free sample bag of sugar to get to know the company and the product better. (A 5lb bag of sugar for FREE, y'all!) I was a little skeptical because it has that tan "raw sugar" look and tastes slightly of molasses. The rep I met said the color is because of their process, and the molasses taste is because it's from cane, not from beets, which makes it non-GMO. OK, so I figured I'd take a risk and give it a try in SMBC.
WHOA.
First of all, it looks like glitter coming out of the bag; the grains are slightly larger. It's mesmerizing and might make a perfect sanding sugar. (I want to experiment with coloring it soon to see if it makes sparkly disco dust.) This stuff tastes FANTASTIC. Soooo much better than white sugar. It didn't need ANY vanilla, and the tan coloring actually turned lily white while whipping, even with the butter, no blue food coloring necessary. I'm impressed.
I'm not sponsored by the company or anything, but when I find something good I want to share it with my fellow bakers, and this stuff is IT!!
Hugs from Tucson and happy baking,
