I've done a million cakes, but this is the first gender reveal I've been asked to do. Anyway, just a few basic questions. Should I dye the cake or the buttercream filling? Also, if it's two-tiered, do I do it to both tiers? Any other advice? I'm excited about this one!

I've seen them done a dozen different ways. If you decide to dye the cake, not a lot of color will be necessary and the same for the buttercream, so that should not be a concern.  If it were me, if I colored the cake itself, I would leave the filling white and vice versa - untinted cake with colored filling.  Yes, I would make all of the filling the same color.  I've seen gender reveals which have a hollow center and is filled with either pink or blue M & M type candies that spill out when the cake is cut.  It sounds fun, enjoy!  Oh, how about making a checkered cake in white and the gender color?  I've never seen one done that way!
