So remember all your lovely suggestions you gave me for an opal cake?  Well life got busy and I didn’t have time to play.  I decided to try a motor glaze with some edible glitter.  The glaze seemed to work ok on my little test bowls, but once in the big cake it ran down the sides like milky water.  Ugghhh!  So I just wiped off the sides and left it as is.  Suggestions on how to spruce it up?  I plan to do some type of piped border but all I have is the chocolate frosting.  I have about an hour after work to try something otherwise I’m just leaving it.  It’s for my mom, not a paying customer.

oh i had this whole thing typed out and i hit the wrong button aghhh

go by walgreen's or godiva's or kroger, the grocery store -- get some flowers --

this cake is a lovely blank canvas -- go for it --

even if you got the chocolate sticks and placed them all around -- tie 'em, with a ribbon -- slap a flower on top --

flowers around the sides -- fill the sides with small rosettes toss some glitter on them --

just a lot of ways to go

I was thinking exactly what Kate said.  This is a lovely cake and a few flowers and/or bows would make it a star!

Eek!  I was crunched for time!!! I just piped some stars and called it a day lol.  Got great reactions though.  My whole family thinks I should go on a baking show.  Clearly we live a sheltered life

It keeps cutting off my posts... anyways, end of my comments was: I wish the mirror glaze turned out for the whole cake, I will have to practice some more.  The blue rainbowy glitter did a great job emulating an opal, I would take away the pink and purple glitter as they expanded a little and just looked like blond.  But it tasted great.... chocolate with whipped coffee filling and chocolate/coffee buttercream!  Mmmmm!

You did an amazing job finishing it off, lovely piping and I really like the glittery effect.
