Hi everyone
This is my first time posting on this forum and I’m hoping you might be able to offer me some advice. I’m an amateur cake maker but very interested in increasing my skills. I would like to make the attached monster cake for my daughter’s birthday and am after advice on the following:
- Is the icing used on this cake buttercream or fondant?
- How can I easily recreate the ombre effect without an airbrush?
- What is the best way to attach the eyes that are on the top layer of the cake?
Thanks for your help!

1) Fondant. If you have never used fondant to cover a cake before then I would suggest watching some tutorials on YouTube.
2) For the top tier ombre look I would probably use color dust and dust it on dry to allow for easier blending from the lighter colored orange to the dark. Use a light hand and slowly build/blend until you get the look you are going for.
3) I would use rice krispie treats for the eyes. Form them to the shape you want and attach them to long popsicle sticks with a bit of melted candy melts. Then frost them with buttercream and cover in fondant/decorate as needed.

Hello. This definitely looks like fondant to me. I don't know how to get the ombre effect without spraying on color (you can buy spray on edible color in cans if you don't have an airbrush) but I think it would be just as cute without it. You could try dabbing very thinned coloring onto the fondant with a piece of food grade foam or sponge which would give a bit more mottled effect - but I would practice first to see if it works out. The eyeball stalks are most likely fondant wrapped around sticks then just stuck in the cake.

This cake is covered in fondant, but you could definitely recreate it in buttercream and only use fondant on the small decoration pieces! Which would allow you to do the ombre effect as well without an airbrush. The last monster cake I did, I used long cake pop sticks with styrofoam balls for the eyes, then covered them in fondant. Good luck!
