Hello!

I'm making an Eye of Sauron cake for my brother's birthday, and it needs black and red frosting. I haven't had any luck whatsoever getting black and red SMBC, and am sort of having luck with the American (still working on the red. right now it's a medium rose/coral color.) The problem is that I (and my family) much prefer the taste of SMBC to American. So my question is, can I fill and frost my cake with SMBC and then decorate the outside layer with American? or does it not work/taste wrong together?  If not, are there premade colored buttercreams out there to buy that taste good and are easy to get? I really want to make this work for him.

Thanks!

Hi,

Have you tried coloured ganache? i've been having a play recently and it's great when you want a bold colour. I'm always reluctant to use any BC when using a lot of colour.

I used it to cover a tier last week and it's great, i'm sure you'd be able to pipe it too. Here's a good link...

Just to add, You'd use white chocolate for all colours but for black use dark chocolate.

No tips on achieving what you want but, imo, there are no premade buttercreams in such deep colors that taste good.  Granted, I'm basing that on the less expensive bakery and supermarket cakes, but still.  Bitter and greasy.
