Hi,

I wanted to know if people take deposits for small cupcake orders. Also, how do you take the deposit online. I have heard of using pay pal but am not sure how it works. Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

You can use PayPal... Just note, that PayPal tends to almost always side with the person sending you the money if a dispute is filed...

I guess I am still old school... I don't take deposits online...

But my business is very very small... I don't even bother with a website...

For me, any order under $100 has to be paid in full at the time of the order. I've had one too many issues with PayPal and do not use it anymore for one of the reasons already mentioned by AAtKT. I live pretty far out in no man's land, so I meet my clients to collect the deposit.

My deposit terms are in the invoices I send out. Client emails or calls to place order, details are finalised, detailed invoice is sent out through my accounting software. Deposits (by bank transfer) are required to secure their orders, payment in full required one month before weddings, two weeks before any other event.

I am thinking about getting one of those square reader things but haven't really had much of a need to justify getting one as yet. People seem happy with how I'm doing things so far!

So how do you take deposits through bank transfers?

So say you're taking a deposit of $100 from a couple to secure their wedding cake, which is going to be a total of $500. I would send them the invoice for the $500 and in the payment terms in the invoice, I have the bank details included and payment notes saying that the deposit of $100 is required to secure their date. They make their deposit payment of $100, using their invoice number as a reference. I see their payment come through and can update their invoice in the accounting software to show the deposit has been paid and send them a receipt from there too.

Hahahaha, lols, doubt it   :)

Only my nieces or my mama are relatives who bake - nieces can't read/type yet and mama uses the internet sparingly.....    :)

I don’t take orders online, but I’ve used Venmo to collect a deposit electronically. You both need a Venmo account. I’ve only done it with people I know pretty well, though. Not sure how they handle disputes or anything like that. If it’s something you’re going to do regularly, I’d look into a paypal or square business account that would give you some protections as the seller.

99% of mine are paid through Paypal. I just send an invoice with the details and off it goes. It's very simple. They don't even need Paypal, it steps them through it. Of course Paypal does take a small percentage, so be aware of that. But, the confidence of having the order paid for is worth it to me. The other 1% drop off cash to me before the order is booked.

Thank you for all the replies. I really appreciate it.

Do you think that I should take deposit on small orders like for a dozen cupcakes? I just had someone cancel a cupcake order two days before pickup. :( Also, for small orders do you take a deposit or the full payment?

@inthekitchen2 , Is there a website or something that will give instructions on how to send an invoice through pay pal?

I really appreciate all your help.

Thanks
