I know this is something we've all talked about but I've never actually done it. I decided to time myself and see exactly how long it takes me to make one of my cakes from start to finish; I found an ap called HoursTracker; which lets you start, stop and save your time for each part of one job...ya'll it took me 35 minutes to make 2 turrets for my daughters Castle Birthday cake; 2 of the 8! I'm actually getting a little concerned at this point Timing Your Work I can already tell I don't charge enough and I was one of the most expensive cake decorators in my area.

i'm glad you're doing this -- i know that home decorators that have never been on the clock anywhere say they are paying themselves $15 an hour or whatever and i know, pardon my french, it's a crock --

cake decorating on the clock is a completely different thing not even close -- it's like comparing a hobby to an intense competition -- no way to measure the difference between the two -- if those people are getting $15 an hour they would have the highest priced cakes in the world --

i've worked both -- from home and in shops

i'm really glad you are shedding light on this -- thank you!

I'll let you know how much time it took in total when I'm done. I'm so glad I decided to do this; I'm not charging for this cake as it's for my child so I thought it was the perfect time to really test out how much I'd be making if I charged according.

yes -- and for next time if you want to try & speed it up -- you can set a timer at regular intervals and decide in advance where you should be when the timer dings -- pretend you are your own employee  and get pissed if you're not fast enough -- 'cause you're gonna be losing money -- y'know a change of mind set -- i mean just to try it
