I’m very.... very.... very new to Cakes. I’ve gotten so much info on here (everyone is crazy talented and so knowledgeable!) and felt ready to try my first order. So I did an 8in unicorn cake for a good friend of my step mom. My first paying customer!! I learned many, many, many things from my mistakes so far.... I got behind schedule because I decided to rebake the cakes last minute yesterday, so I only got the main coats on last night, when I had planned to do all the decorating last night and finishing. So I had to finish it today.
I used this recipe for the unicorns mane - https://www.cakecentral.com/recipe/1948/butter-cream-with-real-butter-for-decorators
I drove it an hour to meet my step mom, and she is driving it another hour home. I checked the cake once I met her, and the back flowers fell off. In the picture of the back of the cake, it was the bottom right corner, about 3 inches high, and 3 inches in that fell off, right around where there little pink stars are, to the 2nd multicolor rose in. Luckily, I read a tip from someone to bring frosting with, and I was able to kind of cover it up, but who knows if that will even stay in place or if more will fall off. Praying nothing more!!!!
i didn’t have time to refrigerate after decorating, so im guessing that, along with the recipe, maybe contributed to the following? The cake it self was refrigerated before I piped the flowers - does that make it more difficult to “stick”. I got the recipe from a post discussing good piping recipes. But I didn’t care for it. It wasn’t smooth, and it wasn’t stiff enough. So what can I do in the future? I have another unicorn cake next weekend!
(To add to the drama of my first cake - I was 2 hours behind schedule for delivery, I left and 15 min in realized I forgot the horn at home, the 2nd venture out I drove through a “closed road” sign and got pulled over - the cop just scolded me... I wasn’t about to tell him my saga lol, and then there’s frickinrg construction and roads closed EVERYWHERE in my city. Needless to say, I learned a lot lol.)

well it's perfectly adorable -- you learned a lot -- good work -- welcome to the wonderful world of cakes (((big hug)))
Horn and ears are made out of fondant (with tylose powder to help harden). I used pink edible dust to paint them. And then used gum glue (Tylose and water) on the inbetween lines and sprinkled silver sugar crystals on the glue.
Ok, was curious. It appeared to be two different materials. lol
