So I'm a home run business and I am doing my first wedding cake in the winter. This summer though, I am doing their cake taste testing and I am unsure how much to charge. Most things I have seen have charged between complimentary and about 15-30$. However this doesn't seem like enough for what I am doing. The cake taste testing is for 5 people with 8 specialty flavours/fillings (all of which I have to make myself). I am also doing design consulting during this time and as the bride as little idea of what she wants, she thinks it could be anywhere from 1-3 hours. I want to charge more (15-30$ seems very low for what very likely will be 10+ hours of work for me) but I'm worried that they will do research online and be annoyed that I'm charging so much when they could get it free elsewhere. About how much should I charge?
No serious cake designer does tastings for free and not for so many people. The tasting party is usually two people, three at the most with a charge of $35 to $50 for half the choices you are offering. The agreement is generally that the cost of the tasting will be rolled into the cost of the wedding cake, if they book with you for X number of dollars, say $500. That way, if they deside not to use your services, you have received payment for your labor and materials. It will also help you weed out those who just want to eat cake with no intention of a serious booking.
yeah -- you're hosting a party for them -- no es bueno
