How Many Lbs Of Fondant Should I Get?

Hello everyone. Looking for some suggestions for my upcoming cake for my toddler son's 4th birthday (10 days away). He has requested a "Mickey Mouse Clubhouse" cake. My problem is that I live in Phoenix AZ and try to avoid working with fondant if possible because of the heat and humidity in the summer, lol. But in this case I have no other choice because I'm going to have a few RKT spheres that I need to cover with black and red fondant for a clean look. My question is how many lbs do you think it will take to cover an 8" sphere, and 2- 4" spheres? I don't want to try coloring the fondant black, as that always leads to a mess that I can't seem to master, so I wanted to just buy some pre-colored black. I don't want to get a whole 5lb bucket if I don't need it, being that I probably won't be using this again in the near future. I will color the red, and other accent pieces that I need for the cake, I just don't want to color the black. Whenever I've tried in the past the black makes it "gooey" because I have to use so much, and it changes the flavor and texture too much once all is said and done. So I'm just looking for a quick cheat if you would, lol. Or if anyone has a magical way to get it black an easy way. I've tried straight black, and brown and black with bad results each time. Any advice, tips, tricks, or anything in between would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the rambling! Thank you in advance! ![]()
Have a great one,

Wilton has black fondant in a 24 ounce box and that should be plenty to cover your 8" sphere, but I am not sure about all three, including the two 4" spheres. Maybe get two boxes to be on the safe side and return one if you don' t need it. They also make 4.5 ounce packets of all colors, just for details like you are discussing. I find it just about as much trouble to make red fondant as black, so I usually buy it too.
If I am just making accent pieces, I use Wilton black fondant. If I need my black fondant to taste really yummy, I use Satin Ice Chocolate Fondant and dye it black. It is easy to go from dark brown to black and it tastes good and does not destroy the texture.
