I don't know anything about the Cricut Cake machine, but I'd avoid it. I have a Circut Explore and use it for cake stuff all the time. I cut fondant, gumpaste, modeling chocolate, wafer paper, cardstock, stencils, and even vinyl (for the cake board). I use dedicated mats and a dedicated deep-cut blade for the edible stuff. Some people will advise you not to use the same machine for cake/non-cake. I only make cakes for family and friends and feel comfortable using dedicated blade and mats. Some people like Silhouette machines (which I know nothing about).
The Cricut Cake works fine, but I thought it had been discontinued. I've only used it to cut gum paste and stiffened fondant and have no idea if you could cut card stock or not. You would, for sure, need a different blade.
