I know we're all in different states/ countries, so I was wondering what/where you all get your base boards from. I've heard of the foam core/styrofoam stuff, but that honestly seems too messy cutting everything to shape for the base since the closest place to get them (for me) is WalMart and they only ever have rectangle/square boards when I go looking for them. Cardboard seems too flimsy at times-depending on the cardboard itself...TBH since I have babies and have only made cakes so far for family/personal use, I usually use the cardboard from diaper boxes since its readily available and I cover it in something food safe regardless after hot gluing
Also, lately I've noticed-especially in pics-that my cakes are all uneven. Granted, I use a serrated knife and level it off the best I can and I'm not expecting it to be perfect by any means. But the last few cakes have been fine when icing but when I stack them they're so uneven/unlevel for my liking....again they've only been for personal/family use...but its still annoying AF, especially since I've noticed it more and more recently. Any tips?
I am a hobby baker and I make all of my cake boards. If the cake is not too large, I use two or three thicknesses of heavy cardboard, but for large cakes, I cut the boards from plywood, particle board or masonite.
I make my boards from foam board from the dollar tree. Usually use 3 layers and have never had a problem. That will support a very heavy cake. Cover with food safe foil - Wilton makes a heavy one. Trim the tops of your cake and use a level to make sure it is even. I think I got mine from the $tree...you only need a small one. Works every time!
Oh, I forgot to say, I too use a level to be sure everything is straight.
