Hi!

I have a potential wedding client, that has already done their consultation and tasting. I sent them their written estimate with the high end and low end of their options. They wanted a 1-2 tier cake with cupcakes.  When I was checking in with them, they said they weren't going to go with me for their wedding cake. Ok, no big deal. But they would like cupcakes for a family event, the day before the wedding. They want the cupcakes in the same style as the ones I quoted them for their wedding and a similar amount. They also made a statement about not needing delivery, they would schedule to pick them up during the day.  The email was worded in an odd way to me, compared to our past communications.

My issue with this, is that it sounds like they are going to order the cake portion from somewhere like Publix and just put my cupcakes with that cake. I didn't show them my contract. I don't have a section about exclusivity. But I don't want my cupcakes with someone else's cake. I have no idea the quality of design and taste the cake they are ordering will have. I don't want anyone to associate that other cake with my cake.

I don't want to accuse anyone of anything but I also don't want my business represented poorly. I was contemplating emailing them back and suggesting that they not go with the same design that they have planned for the actual wedding dessert. That they don't want to "spoil" the surprise. I wouldn't word it in that manner. It would be more tactful. They weren't doing a lot of decorations and were having their small cake and cupcake stand be their decorations.

This is the first time I have ever ran into this situation.

How would you handle this situation?

How many people actually have an exclusivity clause in their contract?

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!

I don't have any input regarding clauses in contracts and such, but it seems like you are pretty uneasy about providing these cupcakes so I would just decline the order.

Could these cupcakes really be for the rehearsal dinner?  Of course!  But listening to your gut is important and if you are hesitant then I wouldn't do it.

if i had a cake business -- i would try to make as much money as possible -- an order is an order to me -- i don't care if they toss them somewhere i get paid for baking and if they pay me i'll bake it --

that's just me

Yeah, my gut immediately was telling me that I need to dig a little deeper or just not do it. They are nice people but I still have to run a business at the end of the day.

I used to not care, in regards to, an order is an order. I was kinda living by that mantra. But over time I have made a name for myself, in regards to style and taste.  Even with all the advertising I have done, word of mouth has still been my strongest seller. I don't want someone to think that a poorly made and/or tasting cake came from me. I also know people don't listen in general, so even if they were told that the cake portion was made by xyz and the cupcakes by me, it could still get around that I made a terrible looking/tasting cake. People generally don't double check anything before they open their mouths. I may sit on this 24 hours to see how I feel about it tomorrow.
