Help With Making A Daffodil Cake - Should I Use Stacking Supports? What Kind Of Icing Should I Use?

Hi everyone! I'm a complete beginner to cake decorating *and* to CC, so I really appreciate your valuable help :)
I am making this daffodil cake (which I understand is rather famous!) for my Nan's 80th in a few weeks. I've seen it around a lot on the internet and CC and have some newbie questions I hope you can help with...
* I'm planning to stack 2 x 9" cakes for the stem section, and a hemisphere cake for the flowers at the top. Do I need to use cake boards / dowels as support for this kind of stacking?
* I am planning to make the stems and flowers out of fondant. Should I also cover the whole cake in fondant first? Or can I stick the decorations directly onto the buttercream layer?
* Any other advice on making this cake for a newbie?
Thanks so much in advance :)
Alex
P.S. This cake is by langranny, I hope it's ok to repost the picture as an example :)

I would put boba straws in to support the weight of the hemisphere cake which will be on a smaller cardboard round. Then I would frost the stem section in green buttercream and the hemisphere cake in yellow buttercream. Do you know how to make the daffodils? I don't, but they look like they would be the most time consuming. Good luck and happy birthday to your Nan.
If you've never made daffodils, you are in for a challenge. I've made them a few times and they are not the easiest flower to make. Gum paste would work far better for the flowers than fondant. If you try making the daffodils, but are not satisfied with the results, make daisies, which are much easier and would look just as pretty.
Unless you need the extra cake, you could use a styrofoam half sphere on top instead of a real cake. It is light weight and would hold your flowers nicely. Be sure and not stick wires directly into actual cake. They must be covered with chocolate, wax or inserted into straws or other support to prevent contact with the cake. That is another reason for using a styprofoam top. You could use a cake board under it for easy removal and frost it with buttercream, just like a real cake.
You will do well! Happy birthday, Nan!
