I read that the "sugar" lace can be stored for months. Each time I did that the laced turned a pale, almost yellow. They were in ziploc bags with the layers separated by parchment paper. It firs two times it happened with Sugar Dress, the third with a pre-made mix that I can't remember the name at the moment.  Has anyone else experienced this?

yeah it turns yellow after a while -- mine says it's ok to use for two weeks -- but i did keep some on the rack for months just because i didn't toss it so -- yeah it doesn't last forever --

Thank  you, K8. Glad to know it is not just me. All the propaganda says the lace can be stored for months, but I have not found that to be the case. Can't make it too far in advance.

yes -- several days in advance a week or two but too long and you risk potential atmosphere issues -- not as sturdy as gum paste or royal anything like that --

I've never used commercial cake lace, always homemade, but I've never had that issue and I've had it laying around for six months.  Since mine is used on models and will not be eaten, I don't worry about food safety.  It also stays nice and flexible and it is just in an open box covered with paper towels to keep off dust.  I've never had the white to discolor, but I did have gold that turned to mustard and one batch of black faded a little.

What a shame that you couldn't make it ahead of time to have for when you need them!!! I guess with cake lace you have to make them very close to the time you need them.  I always try to do things ahead when I know I am making a cake like cutting out my parchment paper for cake pans and mixing up my dry ingredients putting them into a zip lock baggie a couple days in advance just to save a few extra steps which is always a great time saver!!! I will do anything that will save me time!!!

gscout73, Maybe you need to ask Sandra Smiley for her homemade white color recipe for cake lace since hers lasts for six months.

That's a great idea, remnant3333. Sandra, what is the recipe you use? I tried a "homemade" recipe and while it was flexible and lovely, it tasted like glue and was awful.

Well, I've never "EATEN" it!  Like I said, I use it for my chocolate models which are not eaten, but i see no reason why flavorings could not be added.  I use Wilton white gel color.  This lace was made four or five months ago and is still as white and flexible as it was when I made it.

wow -- that's very cool, ms. sandra!

yes it tastes like poo

my thought on adding flavoring is that it might, it probably will change the formula -- but it all might work out great too -- but even adding food color can jam up the works so...idk

I agree, -K8memphis.  When I make black lace and need to add more gel color, I cook it down to a thicker consistency and it works beautifully.  You could probably do the same with flavorings because very little would be required.  I bet you could add either white gel color or white petal dust to any cake lace to help stabilize the color.

beautiful lace @SandraSmiley!  Good to know that it will last that long.

The homemade recipes that I've tried (3 so far)  taste like kids glue/paste to me.  There are lots of people that put it on cookies, but I can't imagine if it ruins the taste of a good cookie & icing.
