I'm making a cake for a friend next month. I am going to do a mountain biking type theme, however I'm trying to figure out how to lay it out exactly.
I'm thinking two tier but I think I want it to be more mountain shaped than defined tiers.. so will I carve the nine inch so at the top it's six .. then roughly carve the six ... And if there is one sheet of fondant over the whole thing (like a draped grass over the "mountain") do I just make a note of the join and cut through the sheet of fondant at serving time ?!
or I could do more defined tiers ... or the other thing could be a sort of wrap around/twirl but would that be hard to carve ...
here are some pics. CC won't let me upload but the first is a more "one mountain" type thing with one piece of fondant draped, then the next is more defined tiers but still one fondant over the whole thing (I feel like rolling such a large piece of fondant would be hard for me ...)

this one I like the combination of rock and green and the slopes but I don't know how I'd do it ?? is it two tiers just carved out that way ?

other ideas? I am definitely leaning toward there being some kind of dirt path down the cake and the cyclist having fallen off the bike. For one thing because it's funny and also because it's just a lot easier to do a bike in fondant that doesn't have to stand alone, or worse a bicyclist ON a bike both standing up. I'd rather just not use toothpicks and skewers and have the worry of it falling over etc.
I made a bike already before so I'm not worried about the bike or the person etc. I'm comfortable with fondant figures. mostly I'm just worried about the cake itself looking silly ...
thanks all
I like the way the last one is done and it would be easy to cover with fondant because you can do it in pieces and no one would ever know he difference. If you wanted the top to be rounded like the one in the picture, you could bake the top tier in a small metal mixing bowl.
Don't worry about your mountain looking silly! Look how different are the three pictures you have attached and none of them look silly. Mountains are very versatile, lol! Carving cake is fun, by the way.
Yea I like the shape of the third one also.
What about making hills in the mountain by laying "bumps" of cake. The fondant will smooth it out and you can add rocks to fill gaps. Also, the hills will also work nicely with the "falling off the bike" theme.
Thank you guys! Yes I suppose since it will be a lumpy type look .. perfection won't be necessary
i can make some extra cake layers and use pieces to form the lumps ... eek! Since I have plenty of time it's fine maybe in advance I'll just make the bike and figure and maybe his dog as well
im sure I'll be back with more questions / aaah it's all going horribly wrong posts regarding this in a few weeks lol
No you won't, @Coffeelover77 (post that it is going all wrong)! You feel comfortable making your figure, which is the hard part. I think you will be surprised at how easy carving and shaping cake really is. If you remember my electric guitar cake, I made the handle completely from the carvings left over from the body of the guitar. Just smear a little buttercream on the pieces to act as a glue and sort of gently smash them into place. Don't forget to dowel for support as you go up!
Thank you @SandraSmiley ! your electric guitar cake was amazing! I suppose you are right smushing bits together withfrosting is fine and nobody is going to complain about getting the piece with all the extra frosting haha!
Another thing I am wondering, looking at the cake with the large rock part... do you think its buttercream then just a bunch of lumps of fondant stuck on one by one? I worry pieces would fall off
Yes, I do think it is buttercream covered cake....or it could have fondant underneath, but yuck, why if you don't have to....with fondant rocks stuck to it. Just be sure your rocks are thin and not too heavy. Unless you cake gets hot and the buttercream starts to melt, you should be fine. I always use a little bit of fresh buttercream to stick on fondant pieces.
