In September I'm doing a cake similar to the one pictured here. I found a silicone mold for the ship. I'm thinking gumpaste is the best option, but I'm open to suggestions about the material. My big question is this: What's the best, most structurally sound way to support the ship that is crashing into the side of the second tier? A large part of the ship will be exposed, and I want to make sure it's stable. I look forward to your ideas!Suggestions For The Best Way To Support This

That's a cool idea! Alrighty so there's two ways I would go about this: easy and hard.lol. The "hard" way would be to use something like pvc pipes to create support through the middle of the cake and through the side by screwing it into the board in an upside down L shape. The "easy" way would be to have a few skewers going almost completely through the ship with still a good amount of the stick sticking out so that it can go deep into the cake and have support. I'd also put dowels where it sits on the bottom tier to make sure it doesn't sag into it. Oh and I'd make the ship either out of styrafoam or rice krispies so that it can be as light as possible. Hope this helps! Can't wait to see how it comes out :)

Good luck!!

I would definitely go the pvc or copper pipe route.

Thanks -- I'm going to do a trial run next week to see what happens.
