I've been asked to do a Judge sitting at a desk cake.  I have a couple of queries would you make the desk the main part of the cake or would you have a cake with the desk sitting on it?

Also, any advice on how to make a desk would be helpful!  I'm thinking making a rectangle cake and covering it with fondant but not sure how to get the woodgrain effect on it?

They don't necessarily want a large cake so opinions would be gratefully received.

I agree that you should make a rectangular cake for the desk covered in fondant.  There are impression mats to simulate woodgrain, but you can suggest growth lines by using a light touch with your dresden tool or other pointed instrument.

I agree, the desk should be the cake.

There are impression mats if you want to go that route. I made a wood grain effect on a wand by just dragging a toothpick through the fondant, then I painted over it with brown food color to really bring out the texture (and because I wanted the wand to be a darker brown than what I had on hand and was too lazy to dye my fondant). Petal dusts would probably work too to enhance the texture, and it'd be less messy than painting. Just some ideas. :)

Fab ideas!  Thank you both so much for your input, I think I'll go with the desk being the cake too.

I'll practice the woodgrain/painting, sounds ideal.

Hi,

I agree with the previous comments, a dresden tool or toothpick would be your best bet if you don't want to invest in an impression mat - frankly I prefer the hand-embossed method because it looks more organic.

I used the same technique on this cake, and painted it witih brown food coloring to bring out the texture, just like Princess Peanut Buttercup suggested. Not sure you can tell in the photo, but the result was quite realistic-looking.

Good luck with your cake!
