I am in the "no refund" camp.  Any refund, no matter how small, sends the signal that you are admiting guilt.  It is my opinion that you should stand firm on the refund issue, but if you would feel better making the gesture (and even this is not necessary), offers them a small anniversary cake.

I understand what you are saying but the comparison doesn't really add up. If you go to a restaurant and your son chooses not to eat the meal he was served, that was his choice.

in this case, no cake was served to multiple people.

I do not think she was at fault, I am sure she provided enough cake however, I think it's a lesson learned situation. She refunds a very small portion of the payment and gets this bride off her back; from now on she provides some kind of information on serving size. A simple printout at the time the order is being placed or a serving size chart in the Contract.

I also think she needs to reiterate the fact that had the servings been cut correctly, she would have had enough cake.

I also think 20% is too much. If one was provided at all, she did get 100 servings so she should pay for 100 servings. Of course an anniversary cake could be provided instead. These are only options with the given information.

The baker is the only one who can ultimately make the call as to what she feels is just given her interactions with the bride prior to the wedding.

If the baker feels this is 100% the venues fault and they should be responsible, then she offers nothing and tells the bride to take it up with them.

to not say the sizes of the cakes is curious because that is how you prove yourself -- you go, "she wanted blabla. I provided blabla" -- done

So according to the Wilton chart, a round cake with those size tiers would yield 128 servings. (Sorry I'm late to the discussion, but I've been following.)

You provided plenty of servings ~ with plenty of extra to allow for variations in cutting. Just how big were they cutting those pieces anyway?

So you gave them an extra 28 pieces to begin with and now they're wanting more?

No. Just no. If they have a problem with anyone, it's the venue, not you.

well then I would absolutely not offer any refund!

email her the wilton chart and tell her you provided 128 servings which means she already got 28 servings for free, she can take it up with the venue if she wishes.

Yup...THIS!   It is the servers and venue NOT the baker. Anyone who cuts a cake, professional or not, needs to know how to get the required number of servings. Give my 16 year old son a cake and a knife and he would have got 20 servings out of that 14/10/6.

So they are saying, the baker's 128 servings served 80. That is more than one and half times the size servings.  Not a small error on their part....again NOT the baker's.

So sorry for your hassle cupcakekisses. But since the ones who got it raved, you did well, in spite of the complaining sister of the bride.

yes that is your defense -- just feed 'em those facts -- and i'm sure the cakes were at least four inches tall so you are completely, utterly in the clear -- even if they kept the top tier for the anniversary --

so clap

good for you!

Seems the going consensus is NO REFUND. And I totally agree. When I read the cake size you provided..oh my, more than enough. As stated multiple times, it's the venues fault, not yours. I also have never ever provided a cutting guide. As others have stated, send a email to the bride explaing the huge error the venue made cutting the cake and that you had provided enough and then some of cake. An offer of 6 cupcakes as goodwill..that's it. Don't let the sisters remarks rock your confidence.

My advice is to step back from this issue. Get busy with your everyday life. Don't read anything about it, put it out of your mind.  In a week, come back to it. By then, you can think more clearly.
