Hi all, so I'm having this debate as to whether I should continue making fondant or buying it. The recipe I have is good, but it takes some prep work. The Wilton fondant from the store is great, but pricey.

What is the general consensus on the fondant issue? If you do buy it, what's your favorite kind? I've been watching lots of people on YouTube (i.e. - Man About Cake, Icing Artist, and How to Cake It) and their fondant always seems perfect.

Thanks for your help.

I used to make my own until I had a large 4 tier wedding cake for a friend. I looked online and found confectioners choice fondant which is almost the same price as marshmallow fondant. Haven't looked back since it's very soft and takes a long time to dry but I love that it gives me lots of time to play

I used fondarific buttercream fondant for my daughter's birthday cake.  I've also used Wilton but I thought the fondarific tastes much better.  I have also heard good things about satin ice.

I love to make my own MMF. But, I used Satin Ice brand for my last two cakes. It was great to work with and tastes very good (to me anyway). I don't enjoy Wilton brand (the taste or workability), but I know it's very popular and people like different things. Satin Ice, to me, is very easy to kneed, color and roll out. I also used it for modeling puppies for my niece's 7th birthday cake.

Hope all of our input helps you with your decision. Good luck!

I use Satin Ice in fondant and gumpaste. Very consistent to work with, tastes good and I find it covers really well.

I made it once or twice and switched to the convenience and ease of commercially fondant.  I've used Wilton (not bad if you mix it with another brand), PettinIce and SatinIce.  They're all fine.

I recently discovered a new fondant that I like.  It's called Fantasia fondant.  I found it's price to be comparable to Satin Ice but MUCH easier to work with.  I found Satin Ice gave me elephant skin and ripped easier.  Fantasia seems much more pliable without tearing or elephant skin.  The only issue I found was that it's a little hard to cut.  I didn't taste it so I can't speak for that.  Wilton is only good for making decorations.  I made my own for awhile but I just couldn't get the texture right, and to be truthful..I was really worried about burning out my Kitchen Aid so I went back to buying it.  I even went to the expense of buying Carma Massa once because I heard it was the top of the line- but it is SO expensive and even more so for shipping and not found in the US.  I didn't like it...it was so soft I couldn't work with it. I had to cover a cake 4 times to get it right. I think it's more for humid climates.  Fantasia is located in California so for those in the US it's a better shipping price and timeline.  I hate paying shipping so I"m hoping on day it will be on Amazon.  Someday I'll get a bigger Kitchen Aid and I'll go back to experimenting making my own fondant again.  IF you do make your own - MIchelle Foster's fondant is pretty good but you need to add white coloring because it's a little off white.  I never could get MMF to work for me at all.
