I have my first real wedding cake order. I've stacked a couple of cakes already but am not sure the correct way of doing this:

This will be a 3-tiered cake - Each tier almost touches the tier beneath, but not quite - maybe about 1/8 inch between tiers. Do I just cut the dowel rods the correct length or is there another way? I would think if I cut the dowel rods just a little taller than the bottom tier, it wouldn't be very sturdy for transporting and I'd have to stack on-site. Is this correct? Just wondering if there was a simple secret to this look...

Thanks so much for your input! I haven't posted a lot but I've learned a lot from everyone else's posts! I love this site!

I would use hidden pillars. And stack on site. If its a cake that you are not to see the boards/plates, just make sure to box your cake and place non skid mat in box under the cake and another piece under the cake box so that it doesn't go anywhere on you. The last one i did had this set up and i left the cake on waxed paper with alittle icing to stick it to it. Then just transported everything like i described.
