Advise On Using Sugarveil After Lace Is Made

I have been playing around with making cake lace with the Sugarveil packets that you can now buy at Michael's. I had to try several attempts to get it to work but now I've gotten to the point that the lace comes out very nicely and looks good. It's flexible and everything. My issue is it does not stay flexible for very long at all. I tried putting it in a freezerbag and squeezing all the air out and putting it in the refrigerator. The next day when I took it out it immediately broke into pieces. How do I prevent that as I only have one mat (strip) of the design I want to use and I'll need to make multiple strips to put on the cake. It takes 24 hours to make just one as I do not dry them in the oven (that did not work for me at all). I need to be able to make the strips and store them until I have enough to put on the cake or do I need to break down and buy multiple strips of the lace and make them all and once to apply to the cake? Any advice/help would be appreciated!
i had great success with the lace mixture from hobby lobby its not sugar veil -- it's sunnyside up bakery brand -- that's my only comment other than next time i will probably mix something up -- there are some pretty easy recipes online using tylose ~~ i already have a bunch of that --
best to you
and what i mean is -- after the learning curve of getting it to set up -- it performed beautifully -- some was just leftover so i kept it and it was great/pliable for months till it yellowed -- i wouldn't use it that old though --
hey, after it crusts use an uber clean fan to help speed up the drying
I have placed Sugarveil lace on something rigid (I used a cutting mat from the dollar store) and then inside a large ziplock bag (2-gallon or 2.5 gallon) and it kept for days. You can keep multiple layers/mats in the same bag. I think the Sugarveil website or FB page also offer suggestions for rejuvinating product that has dried.
My complaint about Sugarveil when I used it was that it would not cut, I had to peel it off the cake before I could serve it.
Thanks for the advise. I think I was not storing it properly. Need to Place it on parchment paper first and fold it over it and then place in zip lock bag. That way I can pull it out of the bag carefully and read on their website to steam it lightly or Place a slightly damp cloth over it to get it to be flexible again. I tried it last night and it worked!
I am going to try the cake lace from Hobby Lobby too. Maybe I will like it better.
i just left mine on the pan on the speed rack -- i don't think i covered it up much
I've only used Cake Lace. I wrap the lace in baking paper (1sheet under the lace and another on top.) I fold all the edges around twice and staple them so that they are firmly wrapped. Then I store the wrapped strips in a cardboard box with lid. (I'm sure a plastic box would work as well.) They're fine weeks later.
I think I read that you can briefly place a damp cloth over the lace to soften it. I haven't tried it, so no guarantees.
