Hi,

I just need to know what this technique is called, the straight lines in the buttercream?

All you need is a spoon to do it...

Put your buttercream on the cake... use the back of a spoon in vertical lines all around your cake... Wipe the spoon between strokes...

I believe most call it "rustic" buttercream....as it doesn't need to be perfect.

If part of your concern is the ombre effect, I believe the decorator used air brush for creating the ombre effect on the buttercream based on the lack of "smudge".
