Hi ! I know this is probably the simplest part of cake decorating. And I've been decorating cakes for 6-7 years now . And covered many many cakes with fondant . But somehow I just can't seem to do this right. There will always be at least one part where the fondant tears. As soon as I place the fondant on the cake and begin smoothing out the sides there will be at least one or more tears. Though I still manage to make them look nice since I make so many decorations that they end up covering the torn parts so no one can really tell. But it's just really frustrating me since I can't understand what I'm doing wrong . I've watched a ton of YouTube videos and read up on tips on different forums but still no luck .
Please help ! If anyone has been through this and was able to find a technique to perfectly cover the cake without tears and elephant skin then please share it with me!
Covering a cake in fondant was the hardest part for me! What I learned, and what works for me is to chill the cake first before putting the fondant on. I also start on the top of the cake, smooth the top, then the edges and work my way down and around. Smoothing the sides first would cause it to tear on the edges. Smoothing top down has eliminated that.
Your fondant should be smooth and elastic. If it's not, it will definitely tear. ypierce82 is correct. Start with a well chilled cake, and smooth the top down. Take your time. Fondant isn't gonna dry out in the 20 minutes or so it takes to smooth. That being said, we've all run into a bad batch of fondant, and it becomes a nightmare. There's where your embellishments come in..flowers, etc.
