2 questions about fondant actually:

1: im making my sons birthday cake in about a month, and they dont have the color fondant i'm looking for. How do i make white fondant into the color i want?

2: when applying fodant to cakes, do you always have to but buttercream inbetween on the cake for the fondant to stick? or can it be regular cake icing?

*sorry if these seem like stupid questions, i'm just starting out on this journey and need some good advise*

you can color the fondant, I use americolor. I just made a couple batches of MMF and I add the color to melted marshmellow due to the fact I need a lot of that color.

Put a coat of frosting on the cake the fondant will adhere to the cake and not slide off.

And no question is stupid, everyone has questions that is how we learn.

for MMF recipe just in case you do not have it. You can make now and store.

No Stupid questions here!

For colored fondant you just need good arm muscles. Add in your gel food coloring and kneed until you get the right color. If you are making mmf it is much easier, simply add the coloring at the start with the water and marshmallows. the whole thing will be the same color that way and no extra kneeding.

I put my mmf over either buttercream that has crusted or a chocolate ganache. Both worked fine, except the ganache got too warm one day and leaked under my fondant! not so good there. You should be able to put it over anything, but someone else may know better.

Good luck! I love fondant and prefer it over buttercream any day!

The others have answered your questions, but I have a question...

What is cake icing and how does it differ from buttercream icing?

I take it that cake icing might be the one you buy in the stores . I did use one from the supermarket. It was pillsbury whipped vanilla frosting. It was ok when I frosted it and then covered it with fondant. The cake I did should be in my photos. It was a bikini top cake. Red top.
