Hello-
Ok, I just did a cake a couple of months a go that requested fondant drapes or swags. I know it gives directions on the back of the box but I can not get ti to work for anything. I just improvised and rolled the fondant and made swags that way. They were totally happy with it. Well this weekend I am making my dads wedding cake. His fiance really wants these drapes. We came up with a different deco idea to use but I thought if I could figure it out she would be so happy!!!! If anyone has any helpful tips please let me know. You can also email them to me if you want. [email protected]
Thanks
Jenn
When I do my drapes, I mix 1/2 fondant and 1/2 gumpaste... I can roll my drapes very thin this way... I try to measure how big I need my swag and then cut out a rectangle of fondant/gumpaste mix. I take four large skewers and lay them on the table, I then lay my piece of fondant on top of skewers and then pull the skewers together to create a pleated swag. I then slide the skewers out from under the fondant and pinch the ends to keep it pleated. Does that make sense??? Sometimes I don't even bother with the skewers and just fold the fondant by hand... I've found when I do this my swags actually look better and the less time I spend fussing with them, the better.
I just uploaded a picture of a cake with swags and I have another one with pink roses in my photo album.
One more thing... I found if I chilled the cake before putting the swags on it helped the icing from getting all messed up.. Sometimes you have to adjust the swags and if the icing is chilled it would leave any marks.
