What else can you cook in a slowcooker other than pot roasts??? I am thinking of buying one but would like to do more with it than throw a few vegatables and meat into it to make a stew etc...Any good sites or recipes anyone!!! Would it be a good investment or are there several of you out there who tend to buy all the gadgets and never use them!!! icon_redface.gif Like me!!! icon_biggrin.gif

One of my favorite websites is allrecipes.com. You can find slow cooker recipes there (among every other kind of recipe under the sun).

Also, go to Amazon.com and read reviews of Slow Cooker cookbooks. There are many out there and you may find one you'd like to purchase.

I'm on a slow cooker e-mail list. Go to chetday.com and look around for the crock pot recipes. There's a lot of stuff on that website (some of it a little out there), but you can find some good crock pot recipes too.

I cook chicken, pork chops, soups, spaghetti sauce and other things in my crock pot. It is very versatile. I will get back to this thread later (don't have time right now) and post a few recipes.

I like to cook a whole chicken in my slow cooker. I also put BBQ sauce with chicken breast let it cook all day. Sweet and sour chicken. I cook spaghetti sauce all day in it. the possibilities are endless

I make Peking pork chops, beans, also if your making burgers inside (rainy days, cant use the grill) I cook my burgers then get some foil add to the bottom (making a tray) so that my burgers don't touch bottom. Add a little water to make some moisture set it on medium. Burgers stay HOT and never dry out. Now some of you may frown, we also slow cook cow tongue. Taste like roast, but better..

One of the easiest recipes I make with my slow cooker is to take frozen chicken legs and thighs, about 8 total, put them in the crock pot, pour a 16 oz bottle of bbq sauce over them and set on high for 5-6 hours......yummy!! Another family favorite is 6 chicken breasts, sprinkled w/salt, pepper and garlic powder....place in crockpot.....mix together 1 can cream mushroom soup, 1 can cream chicken soup and 1 can cheddar cheese soup, mix together and pour over top........cook on high for about 7 hours.....serve over noodles or stir in about 2 cups minute rice about 20 minutes before serving.

I use my slow cooker all the time esspecially when I know I am going to have a hectic day. You can cook almost anything in it, there are some great slow cooker cookbooks out there. I even use mine to steam my Christmas Pudding in.

I think it wouls be a good investment for any busy person.

kiddiekakes,
I am so happy you posted this! I am constantly in search of CP recipes, especially chicken ones...cause I don't eat red meat.

Briansbaker...ewwww!!! LOL As long as you like it, that is all that matters! icon_wink.gif And I never thought of cooking burgers in it! What a great idea!!!

psurette, I would love the recipe for the sweet and sour chicken!!!

CIndymom, that sounds great!

I have read that you can also bake potatoes in it....just put 5 or 6 potatoes each wrapped in foil in there and cook all day...not sure if it is low or high.

I found a great potato recipe a long time ago and don't remember where I found it...but it had cream cheese, sliced potatoes, some kind of onion (not sure if it was green onion or regular onion)....and probably some other ingredients....but it sure was delicious!!!

Great topic!

You certainly can bake potatoes in it. I also do baked apples. Core the apple, fill the centre with dried fruit and sugar and put a tiny amount of water in the bottom. Cook on high for 6 hours then serve with custard or cream

If you google crockpot recipes, you'll get tons of hits! There is one site called 10,000 crockpot recipes or something like that! Crockpot is a real timesaver!!!

Just a word of caution - a few years ago, I noticed my formica counter underneath got quite hot (I'm paranoid of fire since DH's Ford pickup exploded in the driveway and the building his business was in caught fire) so I started putting the crockpot on a cookie sheet on top of the stove. Well, two weeks ago I came home from work to find the crockpot had died during the day. Not only was my chicken still raw, but the cookie sheet beneath the crockpot was scorched!! icon_cry.gif It must've shorted out. I was glad I'm paranoid!!! I still need to replace it - I'm lost without a crockpot!

I've made cherry cobbler and apple crisp in the crockpot. I know people on a recipe group I used to be on raved about a triple chocolate mess recipe but I never tried it. I liked the apple crisp recipe since it had peanut butter in the topping-yummy.
You can find the cobbler recipe on the following website

I have to say, I think I'm the slow cooker queen!! Throw it in, let it brew and tomorrow, there's dinner. I do EVERYTHING!! Homemade spaghetti sauce, pork and sauerkraut, all kinds of soups, ratatouille, stew, beef burgundy, coq au vin, chili, picadillo, curry, whatever vegetables and meat you throw in with stock usually comes out tasting great!! I love it, because there is not much work other than chop, throw, and turn the knob!! Good luck with it! I love mine!!

My aunt brought me one for Christmas a few years back. It's one of those where you can remove the pan from the heating element. I love to use it during the fall and I use it every New Years eve to make black eyed peas. I'm getting ready to blow the dust off and get ready for some winter cooking. I found a recipe on Williams-Sonoma for 6 hour chili, but I'm going to add some beans and use ground turkey (I don't eat beef.)

I love my slow cooker!! My friends always make fun of me because they know that I usually have dinner cooking all day long. I make everything in it from BBQ Beef and taco soup to Cheesecake and dips. There are so many good recipeis out there. I scanned in a bunch last year to send out to all my friends. The whole chicken in the crockpot is awesome too like psurrette said and I have another creamy garlic chicken recipe too that is it die for. All winter long - my sister and I swap recipes. It definately makes my evenings go much smoother not having to worry about dinner prep when the kids and hubby come home!

Crock Pot Cauliflower Casserole
3 C. cooked rice

1 head cauliflower - cut into flowerettes, slice stems

1 can cream of mushroom soup

1/2 lb. mushrooms, sliced

2 C. grated cheese (Cheddar or Monterey Jack)

1/2 C. water

1 medium onion, diced

Spray crockpot with nonstick cooking spray.

Combine all ingredients. Mixture will be chunky, but stir well. Place in crockpot.

Cook on LOW 4 to 6 hours.

Note: The cauliflower holds up well, but the color is dull. You can add peas for color if you like, just before serving.

I love looking for slow cooker recipes this is one I found icon_smile.gif

I got my first slow-cooker for a wedding gift last year. It makes the BEST jam I've ever tasted!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Equal parts sugar/fruit by weight. SOOOOOO tasty!
