I frosted a cake last night and today it has 2 or 3 cracks going over the top. It is a 11 x 15 size cake. Does anyone know why this would happen? I used water not milk. It is a bridal shower cake for 1:00 today , so I have to do it over. Thanks!!

I would first try to lightly wet it with a fine mist and smooth it again. Good luck!

I've read on this site that buttercream made with water is more likely to crack than bc made with milk. I use milk in mine and I've never had it crack...
There's probably no real way to know what caused your icing to crack.

Good luck!

..another thing to consider is the cake board needs to be able to support the weight of the cake. You may need to double or triple the boards and tape them together, then cover with foil, for instance, to hide the tape. That won't help you on this cake but may help on you next time! You should , however, be able to smooth away the cracks instead of doing the whole thing over on this cake.

I posted about this same problem awhile back. Using milk instead of water helped!!!!
