I'm going to guess it's because you are following other users. The same thing happened to me. Every time they comment on a cake or whatever you'll be notified. It's a bit much!
I started a thread "follow User feature" in hopes of getting feedback from others on what they thought but it didn't receive much attention and Jackie never commented. I've simply stopped following people which is really too bad. Maybe one of these days they'll revamp the feature to stop the excessive notifications.
