Would it be best to use black buttercream frosting or is it better to airbrush black onto white buttercream frosting? I have never used an airbrush but am purchasing one. I just can't see myself buying $32 of black buttercream frosting for a $72 cake...

I try to airbrush black just so those eating it do not end up with a black mouth...or at least it's not as bad as black frosting. You could also use blues, purples, and pinks...adding just a bit of black at the end.

You can also buy Wilton Color Mist in black, which will give you an airbrush effect in a bottle, or use an edible paint. Both would be more cost effective if you don't plan on using an airbrush on a regular basis.
