I have a 3 tiers cake for tomorrow and I can't get my hands on some separatorn plates. I was thinking if I can use the pillars without them for support? Or do I really need the plates? I usually stack with straws but since I have to travel on a bad road to get the cake there I want to do it with a better support system. Any suggestions??

As long as you have actual cake boards on the bottom of each tier you will be fine.
