Hello everyone, ive been asked to make a barbell cake like the one in the picture attached. I am thinking of making three separate weights (two layers of cake each) and stacking them, is it possible to stack them without having cake boards on the top and second tier? Also, if anyone has any other suggestion on how to build it, that would be wonderful! Thanks in advance to everyone![postimage id="5784" thumb="900"]

I would build it the same as any tiered cake - it's just that in this case the tiers will all be the same size. I would definitely stack with boards and dowels, same as any tiered cake. It's like a double barrel (or triple barrel) but for this one you want to be able to see the definite line between each 'weight'.

Hope that makes sense!   :)

Thank you me_me1! It makes perfect sense, I had that in mind first but then I thought that the cake slices would be short in height? Also, I've recently just started working with fondant and am so confused about pricing, does $80 sound reasonable for a cake like this?

The slices may be a little shorter in height than a normal cake. I normally do 4" tiers but I think that might look slightly out of whack for something like this so I'd probably only do 3" tiers.

I'm not sure what area you're in so I don't know what your average market prices are, or the size of the tiers - are you doing 6" tiers? But I would say $80 is too low a price. The top tier has a depressed section and a raised central section, that requires some skill in getting that looking perfect all on it's own, never mind getting the grooves looking right in between each 'weight', the lettering and the little barbell on top. Don't sell yourself too short   :)
