I would really like to have a go at making some mmf - looking at the recipe, my question is - as I am from the UK what is shortening and is there a substitute that I could use? - we don't appear to have it over here.

Shortening, is like Crisco, it is the solid form of oil. I am not sure of any other way to explain.

cheers guys -

reading through the recipe for mmf again it looks like the shortening is only used to grease the dish before melting the marsmallows - so would I be ok just to use butter instead or do you think this would alter the taste ?

I did not even use Crisco when I first started making mmf. Worked fine. Not sure about the butter. I occasionally use the crisco, but one time I over used it, as a little goes a long way, and the mmf was kinda greasy.
