I'm making my first cake and want to place my 1in. fondant heart cutouts on a BC cake. What is the best way to attach them? The cutouts will be pretty dry by the time I decorate since I made them a week in advance (they will not be eaten). I know it would be better to adhere them to a fondant cake, I'm just not that confident in my skill level yet!

I've never had any problem sticking fondant cutouts on a cake, its quite easy :) I like to chill the cake in the fridge until the icing is firm (so the icing doesn't "smoosh" out around the pieces when you push them on the side of the cake). Then just brush a little water or vodka onto the back of the fondant piece and apply it to the cake. Your decorations sound small and light, so you shouldn't have any worry about the weight making them slide down the cake. If you ever have any heavy fondant pieces you may want to design them so that you can stick a couple tooth picks through them into the cake to help hold them up. Preferably in a way where no one can tell the toothpicks are there. :)

You can also use a bit of buttercream on the back to stick them on, the same way your would attach a royal icing flower.

That was how I attached the Tudor roses and ivy to this cake:

As she said ^^^

And by the way...why wouldn't you eat the fondant? I always make decoration ahead and since fondant lasts for a looong time I don't see why you wouldn't eat them...?

Thanks so much! I wasn't sure if the cutouts would still be good to eat. They were made yesterday and the party is on Nov 5th. They are covered with wax paper inside a ziplock bag. Think they will be good still?

I let mine air dry or if I'm in a rush in the oven with just the pilot light on. Don't know if they will dry at all in a zip lock bag. But they'll be fine to eat.
