I'm doing a geode wedding cake next week and since I've never done one before I want to figure it out ahead of time.  I did a small cake today to test the waters.  I carved the cake, then buttercream, then fondant in the cutout section, then modeling chocolate on the edges.  The problem is getting the crystals to stick.  I painted piping gel in the cavity the added the rock crystals, some stick, some dont.  In looking at pics of this cake type it looks like the crystals are stacked but I can't get more than a very thin layer of them and it many places they won't stick.  They keep falling off and do not stick to the modeling chocolate very well at all.  After I tried painting them (airbrush paint and vodka) they are now sticky and starting to fall off even more.  What suggestions do you experts have for me?

not that you haven't checked out all these tutorials --

i think this is only ten bucks -- but I can't tell if that is $10 additional for a pattern or for the tutorial -- regardless -- might be worth it --

Try corn syrup or hot isomalt on the fondant if you can manage it. Or just put buttercream or royal icing on it and use that to stick it in there.

When in doubt, I use melted chocolate. It hardens quickly and won't harm most mediums.
